Mass Communication Day

Mass Communication Day was a great experience. I actually expected it to be boring, but it wasn’t and I learned a lot. Kathy Times was a great speaker. Her speech encouraged me to apply for an internship for the National Association for Black Journalist even though my minor in Broadcast Production. I think NABJ would be the perfect experience and it will help me determine if this is the field I really want to be in. She also made it clear that news is very important, and that being a Mass Communication major it is mandatory that we know what is going on in the news. She really encouraged me to start getting more engaged in the news and take advantage of all of the opportunities I am offered.
Crystal Hilliard was definitely an inspiration. She is only 23-years-old and she has more experience than most people at her age. She inspired me to spend more time at TV-23 and learn everything that I can, while I can. She began working in the business when she was only 20-years-old and that amazes me. Also, she informed me on ways to network and how to get my name out there. I will put everything I learn to use.
The speakers were great and inspired me to do better and learn as much as I can. I am happy that you decided to make Mass Communication Day mandatory because I would not have the outlook that I do now. I really enjoy Mass communication Day.

Television as I knew it=)

Television has definitely changed over the last ten years. Television shows, cartoons, game shows, and reality shows have all being impacted from this change. I do not even think there were reality show in my childhood. When I was 10-years-old, I would watch cartoon shows like Rugrats, Ren and Stimpy, Doug, and Looney Tunes. These were my favorite cartoons. Today, there are not to many cartoons that are meant for children. For example, Spongebob is supposed to be a cartoon for children. Yet, he curses and there are also questions about his sexuality. There were not cartoons like this when I was young. I would not allow my children to watch this show. There is also a network called “Adult Swim,” and it appears on “Cartoon Network,” which is a network that airs cartoons for children. “Adult Swim” airs cartoons that are meant to be watch by adults, but since the original network is meant for children, many children tend to tune in. The cartoons characters curse, sell drugs, kill people, and advertise sexual content. Children should not be exposed to these things at a young age. When I was a child, I was not exposed to sexual content, cursing, or drugs. Television today definitely has an impact on children and how advanced they are.

I do not really watch the local news unless I have to. I know that it informs a person on what happens daily in Mississippi, but I am just not interested. Usually the only thing I am concerned with that the news offers is the weather, but I can go online and see what the weather will be like. Also, if I hear it was something important that I should see that aired on the news, I can just go online and watch it. I actually read the newspaper more than I watch the local news.

I am definitely a fan of reality tv shows. They are my entertainment. I love Flavor of Love, College Hill, Run’s House, Keyshia Cole, Monica, Kimora: Life in the Fab Lane, Kendra, and Keeping up with the Kardashians. I get plenty of laughs from these shows. Even though I like these shows, I know that some things they do are just for tv. I basically watch and learn. I know that I will be famous somebody, but a tv show is not the way to go. I would not like my business to be out. Also, I would like to influence the children that look up to me to live there lives right, and follow their dreams. They would not get that if I had my own show and I was cursing, arguing with family members, and doing things that role models should not do. I do not watch PBS at all, and when I can’t watch television I will just catch the show when it airs again.

When a person is anxious about a movie coming to theatres, they begin to count down the days until the premiere. A person has high expectations for that movie, especially if it is a movie sequel. That person expects the sequel to be better than the first. I know I felt this exact way when I first heard that “Why Did I Get Married Too” would be hitting theatres April 2, 2010. I got so excited. “Why Did I Get Married” is one of my favorite movies, so it was definitely a priority to go see the sequel. The previews of the movie aired in February, and on that day, my countdown began. I could not wait for the movie to hit theatres because I knew I was going to see it the first day it came out. I forgot that April 2, 2010 was good Friday. When I made it to the movies at 2 o’clock, it was packed. The line was so long, and I thought that the movie would be sold out by the time we made it to the front. Fortunately, we made it just in time. The movie was definitely a tear jerker. It was not what I expected, but it was even better. I really enjoyed it, and it definitely met my expectations of being better than the first.

In the last 5 years, the film industry has gone down in their quality. Even though Tyler Perry’s film was great, their have been many time that I have gotten my hopes up for a movie, and it ended up being trash. Usually if I want to see a movie, I will go to the movie theatre with my friends or family. Sometimes I watch old movies online, but that is it. I do not download on Netflix or Itunes because I am just not interested. If I like a movie, I will just buy it on DVD. The film industry may suffer from the growing technology. With some the current movies not being so good, less people will spend their money to go see it, and just download it for free. Hopefully the industry can use the new technology to better movies. My favorite movies so far would have to be “Why Did I Get Married Too,” hands down. This movie definitely gets 5 stars in my book!

There may be HOPE!

It is so easy to feel like an outcast. Transferring to a new school is usually hard for a student. I know from experience because I transferred from Mississippi State University to attend Jackson State University. The transition was a little hard because I was accustomed to the atmosphere, classes, and friends I had at MSU. Starting over was definitely hard for me. My family is originally from Jackson, but I still decided to stay on campus. Even though I stay on campus, I am hardly ever there. My roommate and I are not very close, and I rarely stay in my room. I distance myself from everyone. The year is almost up, and I only hang around the friends I had before I left for college. I hardly attend any of the events on campus. To be honest, I only come on campus to attend my classes. Sometimes I even regret coming to JSU. It seems that i am not really interested in anything the school has to offer. I enjoy majority of my classes, and I also get along with my professors. I believe the regeneration of Jackson State will make things around campus more interesting. The school will have a lot more going on around campus to get more students, and the community involved. I hope the regeneration will allow me to finally become interested in what the school has to offer, and help me meet new people. As students, we could help get more students involved in events. I know I am a shy person, but if events were more interesting, I would not mind inviting others to come and be a part of the event. Event should also be advertised better. Students will not attend events that they have not heard about. More posters around campus, radio advertisements, Facebook events, or even Twitter would be other ways to broadcast what is taking place on campus. I believe the regeneration of JSU is a very positive change and will not only help the school and students, but the community as well. The only thing JSU has to do is lead, the students will follow.

Grief in the Age of Facebook!

I have to say that this was an interesting article. Being a faithful user of facebook, I go on the website a lot and change my status. I also look at my friends’ pictures and their statuses as well. It is always hard to deal with a close relative or friend dying, and you do not really know how to take it. I can relate well to this article because one of my classmates died and another was shot during my years in high school. Death is hard to deal with, and many people do not know how to deal with it. This article made me think back on my past experiences. When things are urgent, important, and serious, people make a phone call rather than txt or use the internet. Usually when I hear of someone’s death, it is always over the phone. Also, when I tell someone about a person’s death, it is always over the phone, or face-to-face. I think Facebook, Twitter, and Myspace are the last thing people think about when they find out about someone’s death. I think it is a great thing that Facebook came up with the “memorialized” because it gives Facebook users a way to deal with their grief. Many people in our class are Facebook users, and they know how it feels to lose someone close to them. Being able to blog or leave comments on Facebook gives peoplea chance to grieve. A few days after a person’s death is when reality sets in, and statuses and pictures start to change. No one really knows the right time to start or end the process, but once they see another person dedicate their status or picture, then they feel like it is ok for them to do it as well. I am pretty sure some of my classmates, if not all of them, have dedicated their status, or profile picture to a deceased relative or friend. This definitely help deal with grief and also express memories. Facebook has definitely came up with a great solution on how to help their users grieve.

New Innovations

There are different innovations created everyday. Every new innovation that is created has an effect on society because we allow ourselves to get caught up in materialistic things. Writing as everyone knows it is changing. Writing has challenged so many people. At one point, only whites knew how to read and write. African American slaves had to sneak and learn how to read, then after reading, they learned how to write. Writing used to be the only form of media people had, but before the newspaper was created, people communicated face to face, through messengers, and telegraphs. Then we began to communicate by sending letters through the mail, and then by telephone. Now, people can communicate in multiple ways. Writing has changed society because it used to be the only form of communication. The consequence that was the most influential to society had to be technology because it has the greatest effect on society. People cannot go a day or so without using a cell phone, computer, or radio. The continuous advancement of technology is allowing people to put all there faith in it. I do see similiarities with the societial changes we are facing with the new media. History definitely repeats itself. We may not go through the exact same changes, but we do experience the same things. People from the 19th and 20th century were being exposed new innovations, new ways to write, and communicate. This is exactly what is happening in today’s society. We are being exposed to so many new innovations and ways to communicate on a daily basis. The medium is the message is definitely appropriate for this discussion because it is the way we live. The medium is literally the message. People will continue to come up with new innovations and yes, they will have an effect on man. We are allowing ourselves to be caught up in the new innovations and technology. As I stated before, people are putting their faith into technology, and one day, technology will rule to world. Will technology be our future and will we even have freedom? These are questions you should ask yourself.

The “TRUTH” about Technology

Watching Digital Nation taught me a lot of things about technology that I did not know. For instance, the students that multitasked exceptionally, really were not good at it, and were easily distracted. I too, thought i was born to multitask. I would be doin my homework on Facebook, listening to music, and watching tv. I just knew that I was the best, but now that I think back, it would take me much longer to do my homework. I believe that technoloy is definitely our future, and soon there will not be anything a person can’t do without it. That scares me a little because I am a person that enjoys talking  face to face. My fear is that technology will take that away, and there will be no physical contact. I have to confess that I use technology majority to the day. If I am far away from my phone or if i think that I have misplaced it, it seems like an alarm goes off in my head and I just have to find it. I am also on the computer a lot, whether I am doing homework, on facebook, or learning twitter. This actually Blog is a great example of how technology is used in schools. We use this blog site to get homework, assignments, and communicate. Pretty soon students wont even have to meet in class, all assignments will be online. I have to say that I am not removed because I have learned how to control myself and my life is not basiced on technology. The addiction to computer games in Korea was also interesting to me because I was once addicted, as well. When “The Sims” first came out, I fell in love. I thought it was so much fun to control what other people do. I bought all the othr games that went with it. I would stay up all night playing it, and then I would wake up in the morning and start right back playing it. The only reason I stopped playing is because the cd rom eventaually broke and my mom wouldn’t buy me another game. In the future it will be very hard for Mass Communications majors to find a job because more technology is being used.

Communication Rules the World!

The media definitely has an affect on the way people communicate. We went from only being able to talk in person, to home phones, to cell phones, to text messages, to internet, and now to cell phones with the internet. Many people cannot go a day with using a phone, the internet, or blogs. With all of these different ways to communicate, many people feel that there is no need to meet face to face. Personally, i prefer to communicate in person than online. Chatting online is ok, but talking in person allows me to connect better with the person I am talking to. Talking in person allows me to see a person’s facial expressions, hear their voice, and interact with them. I only like chatting when I am scared to approach the person in public. The interpersonal communications process has definitely been affected by the media because of all the new ways to communicate.

Facebook is a great way to communicate with friends or relatives who may live out of state or go to a different college. I use Facebook to stay in contact with my relatives that live in Georgia. We upload current picures and write each other often, so that we stay updated. My bestfriend attends USM and Facebook allows us to stay close and continue to have a close relationship. Facebook has also allowed to me to meet new people and advance relationships with people I didn’t know to well. Facebook has definitely helped me reach out to people I would not have talked to in person. As I mentioned in my first blog, I am very shy, so I would rather ask about homework or class assignments on Facebook than in person. The media definitely controls the world and the way we communicate, through Facebook, Twitter, advertisements, and more. Today’s society is dependent on cell phones and the internet. These are good ways to communicate, but I will not let them stop me from interacting and connecting with my friends and family in person. Communicating face to face is definitely the best way to communicate.

TO blog or NOT to blog, that is the Question???=)

Hi,

My name is Marquita Levy and this is my first time blogging. I titled my blog “To Blog or Not To Blog, that is the Question?” because by the time i finish my first blog, I will definitely have an answer. Writing is sometimes very difficult for me because I do not consider myself as a very good writer. I do not know how to think outside the box, or let my thoughts flow; therefore it is very difficult for me to express myself the way I want to at times. I would have never thought I would have a blog because it’s not something that I would seem interested in, and if it wasn’t for this class I still wouldn’t have one. I have to say though, so far so good because I am sort of liking it.  I am not a very expressive person. I like to keep all my thoughts to myself, so as the blogs continue, it might be a little harder for me to write on certain topics. I am actually a very shy person, and to major in Mass Communications is very difficult for me. The reason I am majoring in Mass Communications is so that I can gain communications skills, and also to better myself as a speaker and a writer. When I first entered the class, I was thinking about dropping it because the site was hard for me to understand and I was extremely confused. I also didn’t have a twitter page, and I was skeptical about it as well. I stayed in this class because I knew that it would be the first step out of my shyness. I have not gotten used to this site like I want to, but when I do, I am going to be on a roll. Blogging will definitely have to grow on me, but I am sure that when it does my writing skills will increase. I am definitely happy I stayed in this class, and I cannot wait to see what you have in store for us as the semester moves along. The answer to my question is definitely to blog, for now!
